In addition to our current Press Release, Green Map System offers much to reporters. Here are some key points that will help frame stories about this community-led environmental movement:
- Our movement is both local and global – our adaptable mapmaking tools and the resulting locally published Green Maps frame global sustainability issues at the community level, and contribute to greener living on many levels. You can tell your story through the ‘eyes’ of a local Green Map project, by comparing projects in different parts of the world, or from perspective of the global GMS network. With 400 projects in 50 countries participating in this community media movement, there are many compelling stories to highlight!
- Each Green Map project is unique in its approach to mapmaking, partnerships and community building, but all use the same visual language of Green Map® Icons to globally link local sustainability, natural, social and cultural resources. We have been told this is the world’s only universal symbol system for maps. Our iconography has been in use since 1996, helping individuals and communities reduce their impacts on environment and climate and get involved with and enjoy the abundant resources close to home.
- The Green Maps are full of ‘green story’ leads as they showcase a wide range of resources and best practices in cities, regions and neighborhoods, including green businesses and buildings, low impact mobility and renewable energy options, green schools, eco-groups and agencies, ecotourism resources, and even toxic challenges to a community’s health.
- We offer exciting visuals, including high resolution Green Map views, and images of the people making the maps and the places they call ‘home.’ We can provide you with our award-winning Icons, video clips and resources in several languages and mediums.
- As many of our projects have published multiple editions of Green Maps, these visual representations are a record of local progress toward sustainability.
- There is a growing number of unique Green Maps online, so your readers can view the examples your article reports on. And with this website’s new Maps section, readers and journalists alike can find more background, images and resources contributed directly by each local project leader.
- Local participation in sustainable community development has been a key goal of GMS since 1995. At a time when the world is clamoring for hopeful signs of progress on climate change and other ecological challenges, Green Maps offer perspective-changing visions that can inform and inspire individuals, institutions and policymakers. GMS is an award-winning ‘technology benefiting humanity’ that actively links local projects into a powerful and exciting global network.
